Stacie Halas banned from teaching: you can’t escape your past online
STACIE Halas, 32, will not be teaching class in California. The middle school teacher with the porn actress past (photos NSFW) has been deemed “unfit” for purpose. In April, 2012, Halas was removed from her post as a science teacher at Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard after students and teachers “discovered” her porno past.
She had not worked in porn whilst a teacher in the district.
Halas appealed. Now that appeal has been rejected.
And so it came to pass that in the same State when the legal porn industry booms and busts, a worker can be deemed to be the wrong sort of person. Said Jeff Chancer, superintendent of the Oxnard school district:
“Maybe it’s not a crime as far as the penal code is concerned, but we feel it’s a crime as far as moral turpitude is concerned.”
Watching porn is fine. Supporting the industry is ok. Finding your teacher at it online is an “accident”. Producing porn between consenting adults is wrong. Got that.
Judge Julie Cabos-Owen said of the ruling by the Commission on Professional Competence:
“Although (Halas’) pornography career has concluded, the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the Internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague.”
Her lawyer, Richard Schwab, replied:
“Miss Halas is more than just an individual fighting for her job as a teacher. I think she’s representative of a lot of people who may have a past that may not involve anything illegal or anything that hurts anybody.”
It’s not her porn past that prevents her teaching, it’s the availability of her past on the web.
You can’t help but think that it time to come, say, 10 years from now, many budding politicians, teachers, nurses, doctors and lawyers will be presented with something unusual from their youth. If cossetted roual liks Pricne HArry and Kate Middelton can be filmed flashing the flesh, what hope for those of us without protection officers?
Ed Balls, our Shadow Chancellor, liked to dress as a member of the Nazi SS. Had a video of his doing so been available, rather than grainy photos, we’d shun him. If we could see camera footage of a young Barack Obama or David Cameron smoking weed, would they have made it to the top of the greasy pole? No. What about camera phone video of Bill Clinton’s extra-martial shaggings – had only Monica Lewinsky filmed her probings rather than talked about her below-the-desk White House internship, would the film have helped Bill cling on to power? The dice would have been more loaded than George Bush at a frat house party. And we’ve seen no videos of those hazy days.
Halas has been hard down by, literally.
